The Instructor - Externship Coordinator balances the role of an instructor and the role of an externship coordinator.
As a member of the Faculty, this role is responsible for teaching in a discipline area in which an Instructor has specific training and competence. The instructor is expected to plan, organize, and teach in a manner that encourages a student-centered learning environment in harmony with the school’s mission and values.

This role promotes and directs successful student learning in keeping with the learning-centered values and goals of the school. This role supports the academic department in maintaining a successful, efficient, ethical curriculum.

The Externship Coordinator assists students in meeting their academic and career goals by serving as the initial point of
contact for students scheduled for an externship course.


This role is responsible for coordinating externship activities such as student orientation, scheduling, and networking
with local site partners to establish relationships and build rapport; partners with Career Services to maintain externship sites,
maintain contact with employers and prepare students to make the exciting transition from the classroom to the final externship course


Job Description:
  • Providing hands-on classroom instruction.
  • Maintaining and updating course syllabi; assisting in the development of new curricula.
  • Cover all material in depth and scope as described in syllabi.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching styles and methods to accommodate diverse learning styles of students.
  • Preparing and utilizing approved lesson plans.
  • Evaluating student competence based on program philosophy and objectives.
  • Preparing student progress reports and grade reports; maintaining accurate and timely attendance records.
  • Attending faculty meetings.
  • Follow the school academic policies at all times.
  • Supervise externship training in compliance with Accreditation, Education Department and company policies and regulations.
  • Facility the student transition from class work to externship to graduate in preparation for employment and placement.
  • Locate, evaluate, approve and acquire new externship sites to meet student site placement needs for each module.
  • Visit sites and obtain signed agreements before placing students at site. 
  • Maintain Externship Affiliation Agreements which must be reviewed and renewed annually.
  • Match students to appropriate externship sites that meet the needs of both the site and the student.
  • Secure all evaluations from the sites and externs to include for departmental reporting.
  • Track Externs attendance and ensure that all extern assignments are completed as determined by the program and set by regulatory requirements.
  • Select and approve appropriate extern sites for students.
  • Provide orientation for the on-site supervisors and students.
  • Provide oversight of the externship experience, including on-site assessment of student experiences and the quality of learning opportunities.
  • Determine the documentation requirements such as immunization records, resume or site specific forms for each site and track student compliance with providing the information.
  • Work closely with Career Services to support of the facility and the student and work towards identifying sites that will lead to employment.
  • Report regular progress of students and quality of medical supervision and education to Program Director.
  • Provide written evaluation of employer and student satisfaction during the course of the externship for student files.
  • Guide students in educational concerns. Refer students where appropriate.
  • Achieve externship-to-hire conversion goals as determined by the Campus Director, Program Director and Corporate Director of Careers Services.
  • Travel to externship sites as required.
  • May be required to provide classroom instruction in the event of an instructor absence.
  • Other duties as assigned by Program Director or Career Services.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with a minimum of a certificate in Medical Assisting. Advanced education or college degree preferred but will consider candidates with equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience working as a Medical Assistant. Supervisory and/or Administrative Management experience in the healthcare industry is a plus.
  • Excellent presentation and communication with the ability to demonstrate both written and verbal persuasiveness.
  • Self-starter, excellent organizational, problem solving and customer skills.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and multiple demands.
  • Ability to motivate and influence change with an appropriate level of persistence.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office Skills.
  • CampusVue experience is a plus.
  • Must have current car insurance and a valid, unrestricted driver’s license with ability to travel between campuses   locations and externship sites.
